The aim of the workshop is to provide some basic insights into the methods used in economics research. This term we will focuse on the work with relational databases. The workshop consists of two lectures (90min), individual work and final presentation. In particular, students will work with European patent office database - PATSTAT 2016. They will analyse patent macroeconomic indicators in topics like e.g. Big Data, Nanotechnology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, or other (one topic per student).
Assessment will be based on a small report of 7-8 pages and a presentation (done in pairs).
A prior knowledge in relational databases, SQL, any programming lanquage or experience with patents is welcome but not needed.

For those of you who have already experience with SQL the technical part might be a little bit boring, but we promise interesting additional assignments and vast amount of patent data to explore.

The workshop is given in English.
